Hit me with your best shot

** Update** Ok, so its only been a couple of days (or A day... whatever) and I've already decided that I need to take small steps. I'm gonna start with organic milk. I'm afraid if I get too gung-ho all at once, I'll crash and burn and give it all up. So, if anyone has any reference sites, I'd still love to see them, but for now, pasteurized organic is the Milk du jour. :)

I might have to make it a new theme to make all of my post titles song titles. :)

Thursday night I went out for my monthly coffee date with a friend of mine. Its so nice to get out, sit and chat with a friend about... whatever we want. :) But since the topics of health issues and nutrition for our families have been on both of our radars recently, that was the topic of the night.

The thing that prompted me to bring up the subject HERE is... (dah dah daaaahhh)... raw milk. :) I feel like I've been hearing about this more and more recently. A few of my friends drink raw milk. A lot of blog authors that I read advocate for raw milk. And my opinion on raw milk vs. "store milk" is that I prefer to drink something that doesn't taste like grass. Gross. It separates like the breastmilk I pump out and has to be shaken up before its drinken. Sick. Until recently I hadn't been willing to actually look into the nutritional benefits... honestly, because it just sounded nasty to me. But in our house, with all of our little ones, we go through FIVE gallons of milk a week and anything we're purchasing that much of, I'd like to be certain its the best thing for our family. I've also been pumping lots of probiotics into my kids recently (actually probiotics are kind of like my new best friend, lol!), and probiotics are naturally found in raw milk. And I'm not saying I'm about to get all crazy organic or anything, but the case for raw milk is seeming to grow stronger the more I look into it.

SO.

I want to do some research for myself and I'm not sure where to start. I want to look further into this but before I go knocking on a farmers door for a freshly "squeezed" glass of milk, I'd like to know what I'm getting into. This is where you come in. Can anyone out there in internet land give me some advise on where to find information that I can rely on? I generally feel that anyone who's selling something isn't the best source for information... and I don't want to rely on "Mckmama said its better, so it must be". I want some cold hard facts. And though there are some great resources out there, I also know you can't believe everything you read on the internet.

So, suggestions anyone? Sites? References? Hit me with your best shot. Why should or shouldn't I make the raw switch.

  1. I have no idea whether it's better or not, but be sure to buy it pasteurized, as you might get sick otherwise.

It tastes good though, and make wonderful pancakes :-)

  3. Raw milk does in fact mean not pasteurized. There is a lot of misinformation out there. You know I'm happy to share with you all i know. We've been drinking raw milk for 6 years. You never want to drink raw milk from just any ol' place. THe reason milk starting being pasteurized back it the day was because of the unsafe mass producing conditions the cows were in. THe milk was not sanitary so they had to pasteurize it to kill all the crap in it...and give cows antibiotics, etc. Raw milk is an amazing product. Go to this website http://www.realmilk.com/why.html. There is a lot of controversy about raw milk mainly because large dairy farms who control the gov't food laws don't want you to stop drinking their products. It's the same with eating grassfed beef, free range chicken, etc. Check out the website. Love you girl!
