What foods bother you the most and what (if any) dairy products don't? Is there anything you take for it (meds, probiotics, etc.) that helps? Comments on my blog or on FB are welcome. (Or if you'd rather comment anonymously for any reason, go for it.)
Micah is lactose intolerant. I was told that he was likely not born lactose intolerant but that years and years of having a parasite destroyed his body's ability to process lactose. But in trying to feed him, I have several factors working against me.
Because he's not talking, he can't tell me what he's feeling. He can express hurt by signing but sometimes its hard for him to tell me where he's hurting and how. He also has a super high pain tolerance (if you didn't know, a lot of individuals with varying special needs have a high pain tolerance) so if his tummy is bothering him but he's not in severe pain, I probably wouldn't even know.
Also-- because he's fully potty trained-- I don't see what his *ahem* bowel movements look like unless its bad. But I don't know how long it takes after he's had something to have a "bad one" and he needs help cleaning up. (He knows to knock on the wall if he needs help.)
Ok, well. Thats it. Thanks for any insight or help!!
Hi, I can eat cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, and yogurt. Do not handle ice cream or cows' milk well at all. Had some trouble with whey protein, too. Lactaid milk is OK, but I think it makes my ears itch. Soy milk and almond milk are fine.

I can eat cheese, sour cream, and yogurt in small amounts so long as none of it is too cold. Harder cheeses like parmesian are easier for me to eat. For whatever reason, the colder the dairy product is, the worse it makes me feel. I can't handle milk or ice cream well at all, even in very small amounts. I tolerate frozen yogurt better, still have some digestion issues with it but not as bad as with ice cream (and it's tasty so sometimes eating it outweighs what is going to happen next).
ReplyDeleteVanilla soy milk is really tasty (though some brands are nasty so you might want to taste test them yourself - Silk is my favorite, Whole Food's brand is good too) and goes great in cereal and smoothies.
I can eat yogurt and frozen yogurt. I can eat baked goods with milk in them, Cheezits, brownies, etc. I've had lactose intolerance for 15 years. Recently I had a stretch of a few months when I could eat ice cream & cheese without a problem, but still not straight milk. Now I take a Lactaid pill whenever I eat ice cream, pudding, or cheese. I drink lactose free milk, and I do best with the skim (nonfat) for some reason. Remember that milk is an ingredient in lots of things- read labels- I even found it in bologna once!
ReplyDeleteI'll echo what the others have said. I stay completely away from milk and ice cream. I can handle yogurt, hard cheeses and from time to time I drink soy milk. I enjoy fruit smoothies made with yogurt. I also take supplemental calcium and vitamin D since limited dairy makes it harder to get enough of those. I'm also careful about cakes, pies, etc. that may have a high milk content such as custard pies and Tres Leches cake.

ReplyDeleteThank you all so much for your input!! This is so good to know!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi I'm lactose intolerant and my sister reads your blog. She ask me to leave a comment.
ReplyDelete1. High fat dairy is better than skim/ low-fat. Anything low-fat/ skim causes extreme GI pain. More fat equals less lactose (milk sugar) per cup.
2. Some cheeses have no lactose because of processing. Yogurt is lower in lactose than other dairy due to the fermentation process. These are the easiest forms of dairy for me.
3. I always take a milk digestive enzyme to help my body process dairy. I have tried many different kinds; as long as it contains lactase it works. Right now I have a Skaklee one called E-Z Gest. It works.
4. Silk brand Almond milk is my favorite substitute. Sometimes their website has coupons; however, it's still expensive:(
Hope this helps!
