Ashley's Memory Verse

Tonight I was going through Ashley's homework with her- part of it being scripture memorization. She's working on the first three verses of Ephesians 6.

A lot of times I'll explain the verse to her and/or read the ones around it. Putting it in context helps her to understand it better and therefore memorize it quicker. It might make her get a word or two wrong (because she's using her own paraphrase) but at least she's thinking about the meaning, which to me, is more important than the difference between "all" or "every". You know what I mean?

Anyway tonight we sat and worked on these scriptures:

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2"Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3"that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."

So as I'm reading it to her for the first time I'm telling her: "It says to obey and honor Mommy and Daddy. And guess what? If you do, there's a promise for you!" To which she got excited and her face lit up a bit. I was thinking- this is awesome, she's learning to obey AND to get excited about the promises of God.

So I said, "It says if you obey your mother and father that it will 'go well with you' and you will 'enjoy long life on earth'!" And her brightened face crumpled up into almost angry frown of disappointment.

"What?!" I said.

"But I don't want to be on the earth for a long time, I wanna go to heaven!!!"

Touché. I think I'm gonna have to agree with Ashley on this one. :)
